Dry skin, which is also called xerosis, is a common dermatologic condition. Most people are bothered by flaky, itchy, tight skin at some point in their lives. Children itch because of the dry skin associated with atopic dermatitis. Dry skin is practically universal in people older than 60. Some people have a genetic predisposition to dry skin.
Others develop cracked, dry skin because of systemic or cutaneous disease, hostile environmental conditions, systemic or topical medications, or exposure to harsh soaps and detergents. One important source of moisture is transepidermal water. Transepidermal water is the moisture that migrates upward from deeper dermal tissues to the epidermis, where it hydrates adds water to the stratum corneum and then evaporates into the atmosphere. This process is called transepidermal water loss TEWL.
